1st July – Hong Kong Special Region Administrative Establishment Day

Since 1997, Hong Kong celebrates “Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Establishment Day” on the 1st of July every year. This public holiday, special and authentic only to Hong Kong, commemorates the transfer of sovereignty from the United Kingdom to the People’s Republic of China. Hong Kong’s Special Administrative Region is established.

Hong Kong’s Special Administrative Region Establishment Day is customarily marked by officially organized fireworks display and political rallies demanding suffrages.
