Hong Kong is the world’s largest importer of bird’s nest; a bowl of bird’s nest soup easily costs up to 30-100 USD. Being such a sought after delicacy here in Hong Kong, it is no wonder why brands are increasingly implementing different marketing strategies to stand out.

Food for Thought: The main ingredient of this aptly named food is the saliva nests built by cave swifts.

The Chinese consume this soup due to a long held belief that it maintains a youthful, radiant and wrinkle free complexion, alongside many other health benefits.

This particular brand spotted at Watsons Pharmacies, is offering a gift with purchase to its customers. A mug complete with a spoon and cover – providing obvious utility in using it to drink the bird’s nest soup.

However, there is a downside to this. Bird’s Nest Soup is deemed to be a luxury delicacy even for instant ones. This mug set features kiddish designs which is better off as a GWP for things like cereals/milk.

We do think that a high end bowl or mug would be a more suitable option in this case. This brand should definitely review their strategy again since its target market is more towards working professionals who has the purchasing power to buy these supplements.

Suggestion: Since a glass bowl wouldn’t work in scenarios of on-pack packaging, the brand could always work on the design to create a more high end vibe.
